Explore The Mekong River - Travel tips

Immortalized in 1990 by Nicolas Hulot in his cult show "Ushuaia Nature," the descent of the Mekong River offers a variety of landscapes, events, cultures and experiences simply stunning. You also experience the exploration of these lands that exalt the imagination. On a sampan on a dhow or motor, the adventure begins in Thailand. First discovery of the Golden Triangle, Chiang Rai, a small town founded in the 13th century by King Mengrai where they found the famous Emerald Buddha (now in Bangkok visible) and still houses the temple of Wat white Rong Khun. Then get to the border in Thailand through a genuine, off the beaten tourist!

Cross the Mekong River to Huay Xay city of northern Laos and discover a country whose whole life revolves around this marvelous river! North, your exploration will take you to meet Hmong and Yao minorities. Do not miss the caves of Pak-Ou: Tham Ting and Tham Theung home to hundreds of wooden Buddhas. Nature also offers beautiful surprises: the river and houses (rare) freshwater dolphins of the Irrawaddy, the giant catfish (they weigh up to 300 kg!) As well as unique specimens of giant rays which can measure up to 2.10 meters (without the tail) and weigh up to 350 kg! On the banks, the jungle is a favorite refuge of monkeys, birds, frogs and other geckos that eventually you will see if you pay attention ...

Then arrived in Luang Prabang, the former royal capital where you revel in the Buddhist monasteries and temples, proud symbols of the ancient "kingdom of a thousand elephants". Among the many buildings classified as World Heritage of Unesco, do not miss the old royal palace, dating from the 20th century (at the time of the French protectorate) and Wat Mai temple in the typical Lao. Then continue to the current capital, which Vintiane colonial villas give it a discreet charm, away from mass tourism. Then heading to the south of Laos, the region Siphandone "4000 Islands", a natural treasure and heritage. On the riverfront, visit Wat Phu Khmer shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva and visit the many floating villages before reaching the Cambodian border.

The easiest way is now to take a plane to Siem Reap to visit the lost city of angina, mysterious land we told you about here. Do not miss the Lake Tonle Sap, the largest freshwater lake in Asia, World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its unique biosphere. Finally, end your adventure in Phnom Penh, the "Pearl of Asia", which offers a unique blend of Khmer and colonial traces. Lose yourself in the city center and admire the grandeur of the Silver Pagoda and the Royal Palace.
